*Award Winning Wildlife DVDs based on books by Carl Sams II and Jean Stoick are shown by request or request. The DVDS are also for sale in LeRocher, the Foundation book Store next to the information desk.

For Kids - 2018 Saturday Films*, Weekend Events & Special Programs. Ask about our Jr. Ranger Program for Kids!!!

Award winning wildlife film series based on the books by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick will be shown at 11 am by request on all Saturdays from November - April.

November - December: "First Snow in the Woods" ...trust change...Fall!

January - February: "Stranger in the Woods" ...be surprised....Winter!

March - April: "Lost in the Woods" ...trust & patience...Spring!

 

January - 2018

1/1 1pm - Winter Hike!

Take part in America's 1st hike leaving the VC at 1pm on Sunday the 1st day of the New Year! Eagles and ice falls may be waiting for you! Make a New Year's Resolution to visit the Park every season this year!

1/20 & 21 - Winter Wilderness Weekend

Guided hikes for the entire family leave the VC at 9am & 1pm each day. Experience the Park with snow covered trees, trails and ice falls!

1/27 & 28 - Eagle Weekend

LEARN ABOUT EAGLES AND MORE from 9:30 - 3:30 Saturday & Sunday! Spotting scopes will be available with volunteer assistance on top of the Rock and by the base of the Rock (next to the seawall) to see the eagles perched at Plum & Leopold Islands in the middle of the river. Other activities are scheduled in the VC, at Starved Rock Lodge and the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center. View schedule at illinoisaudubon.org

February - 2018

2/11 1:30pm - Winter Drum Circle

Move to the beat with local musician Dave Peterson, as he leads an interactive drum circle featuring African Percussion & Native American flutes. This hands on activity will be fun for the entire family. Drums are provided or bring your own!

March - 2018

3/11 11 am & 1pm - Birds of Prey LIVE!

SOAR-Save Our American Raptors will be on hand with live birds of prey! See birds of prey such as falcons, owls and hawks up close! Learn about the impressive adaptations and behaviors of these remarkable birds.

3/18 1:30pm - TAP THE SAP!

Join our Park Naturalist Lisa sons for a presentation on the history of maple syrup from Native Americans methods to modern day. Try a piece of maple sugar and head outside to find a maple tree and learn how to tap for sap!

april - 2018

4/22 11am - Earth Day Hike

Celebrate Mother Nature at Starved Rock! Join the Park Naturalist for a hike to the top of Starved Rock and into the bottom of French Canyon. Learn about the history and geology of the Park. Meet at the visitor Center at 11am - the hike lasts 1.5 hours.

4/22 1:30pm - Wildlife Prarie Park presents "Amazing Animals"

Skunks, turtles & owls, OH MY! Get up close and personal with these native critters, and many more. See what makes them so absolutely amazing......live animals!!! 1:30pm

4/28 & 29 - Wildflower Pilgrimage*

Guided hikes for the entire family leave the VC at 9am & 1pm each day. Experience the Park with wildflowers popping out at every turn of the trail....remember don't pick them!. Usually spring is a good time for wateralls too; IF we get those spring showers!

May - October

Falconry: Rich Escutis

Join our local falconer with his pair of Harris Hawks and female Red Tailed Hawk for an up close and personal educational visit birds of prey - they will be located by the cabin behind the Visitor Center from 1-3pm:

5/12-13, 5/19-20, 6/2-3, 6/16-17, 7/7-8, 7/28-29, 8/4-5, 8/25-26, 9/8-9, 9/22-23, 10/6-7, 10/20-21.

5/5 7:30am - AutumnMigratory Bird Hike

Join the Park Naturalist and local bird expert, Tom Williams, to seek out resident birds and greet our spring migrants. Bring your binoculars and your favorite bird guide. Hike will leave the Visitor Center at 7:30am and last 2 hours.

5/6 1:30 Incredible Bats

In this 1 hour program you will get an overview of the world of bats, as facts are separated from fiction surrounding these nocturnal creatures. A multi-media presentation of live Egyptian Fruit and African bats will entertain and enlighten!

5/20 1:30pm - Reptiles & Amphibians

Join Wildlife Prairie Staff and a few of their reptilian friends such as turtles, salamanders and snakes for a family fun program that will give you a new found respect for our cold blooded friends!1:30 pm

june - 2018

6/2 10am - National Trails Day

Hike to the top of Starved rock and into the bottom of French Canyon with the Park Naturalist. Learn about the history and geology of the Park Hike lasts 2 hours 10am

September - 2018

9/2 11am & 1pm - Birds of Prey Live!

9/15 8am - Autumn Migratory Bird Hike

9/23 1:30pm Buzzing,Beautiful, Bees!

The Honeybee: an amazing creature. Merlin and Susan Calhoun will give us a sneak peek into these tiny creatures' amazing lives, including habitat, behavior, and the challenges they face in our world.

October - 2018

10/21 & 22 - Fall Colors Weekend

Join hikes leaving at 9am each day from the VC taking you to see the spectacular colors of fall and learn about the history & geology of the Park along the way.

10/27 11am & 1pm - Creatures of the Night

Saving Our American Raptors "SOAR" will be on hand with several species of owls native to Illinois. Learn about the impressive adaptations and behaviors of these remarkable birds of prey at 11am or 1pm.

10/27 - Haunted Halloween Festivities

Luminary Lit Hikes leave the VC at 5 & 6pm

Free crafts for kids in the cabin next to the VC from 5 - 7pm.

Halloween storytelling with Bill Myers in the VC at 7pm lasts 1 hour.

December - 2018

12/30 1:30pm HolidayStorytelling

Bill Myers, local Illinois Valley storyteller, will be spinning his Holiday tales in the Visitor Center. Storytelling is great for all ages. 1:30pm
